My first class experience..

On Wednesday 24th, I had my first class experience with advanced level. First, I started the class with a warm up activity called “pass the ball”. I played some music and then, when I stopped the music; the person who got the ball told me orally the correct order of one sentence related to the topic I taught them.

After that, I explained them the grammar part about Verb Patterns (gerunds and infinitives). I used some charts to explain the information, and I provided students some examples according to it.  It took me a lot of time to explain that because I gave them a lot of examples so that they could assimilate better the information.  At the end, I made a fill in the blank activity in order that they could practice about when to use a gerund or infinitive in a sentence. In this activity students worked individual and then, I checked students’ answers orally.

I really liked this group because they pay attention to what I tell them and most of them participate in the class.
Something that did not go so well was that since the beginning, I had some problems with two girls because they did not want to participate in the warm up activity nor in the exercises. They just wanted to speak or use the cell phones. And I tried to call them the attention, but they did not care. I felt really uncomfortable because of the reaction of the girls since the beginning, but I hope they behave different next time.

  1. Hi Vero,It´s always nice to comment on your blog. Music in the class either in the warm-up or as an activity ,contributes a lot to have a confortable environment. The topic ,let me tell you,is not so easy and it requires a great effort for both teacher and students to get engaged.
For these rebel girls some team work could help. Good luck next time.

  2. Hi Vero! I liked the warm up because it was an oral activity and as you know it is important to include oral activities at the beginning because it is an opportunity to get students attention and confidence. It is so difficult when you have to explain a new topic in the grammar because they won't understand in the first time; however, you did it great and fill in the blanks is good activity to check if students have understood. It is uncomfortable when you have students who don't pay attention because that can makes you feel nervous, but we have to establish the rules in the classroom....

CONGRATULATIONS MY CLASSMATE, YOU DID IT WELL!!!!

  3. Hello Verónica!! I see your topic was mostly about grammar explanation. I think you tried to do your best. In those cases, we have to look for the clearest examples or the ones that we think are best suitable for the group. It's bad to hear what you faced. I guess that you ought to be a little bit more serious and strict. Remember to set some rules for your class, so that you can avoid those kind of circumstances. Keep improving Vero. You'll do better in that sense next time!! Blessings!

  4. Hi! Well, explaining grammar can be a headache, but you did a very good job. You had a bad experience, but hey! Do not see it as a failure but as a window to learn. Try to do better next time, I know you will do it. Anyways, set some rules before starting, and you will have a little bit more of control over your students. I know you will do always well :).

  5. Hi Vero!!!
I like the activity you used as a warm up because it helped you to make them speak.
It´s good to see that you used many examples at the time to teach grammar. In this way students can acquire the information. The fill in the blanks activity was good because you could check if they had clear the grammar explanation. With those difficult girls you may look for activities that can catch their attention. Next time will be better!!!!

  6. hello my friend, as my other classmates said before, the game pass the ball is a good activity to start the class and motivate students to participate in the following activities.
I had experiences teaching the grammar notes and I know that is s difficult, but you did it very well because you provided a lot of examples for the students.
and the problem with the girls, don't complicate your life ok. in the next class try to involve them in the activities and if they won't want to participate remember them that they will teaching one day and they need to practice if they want to pass the subject. :)
