My Third Class…

On Friday 16th, I had my last class with advanced group and I really enjoyed this class more than the previous ones because students participated a lot. First, I made a warm up activity and it was a review of the previous class. I made some questions such as, what topic did you study yesterday? What is reported speech? And so on.

After that, I explained them the grammar part about imperatives and request, and reporting verbs.  I used some charts to explain the information, and I provided students some examples according to it. At the end, I gave them a fill in the blanks activity and I gave them a lot of time to develop this exercise because it had a lot of sentences. Then, I checked students’ answers orally.

Something that didn’t go so well was that when I was explaining the grammar part some students ask me questions about it, and one student asked me a tricky question; and in that moment I got nervous and I didn’t know what to say, but then I tried to give an answer but I was not sure. So, I have learned that as teachers we must read and investigate a lot regarding any topic we are going to teach because only in that way we are going to give a right answer in case students have any doubt.

In the feedback, the teacher told me he really liked the way I taught the grammar part, and he also told me that he liked the way I interacted and monitored the students. In general, I feel very happy because I tried to do my best in every class, but I know I still need to improve some things.

My Second class experience...

On Tuesday 8th, I had my second class experience with advanced level. First, I started the class a warm-up and it was a fill in the blanks activity. I gave students a short reading about “traditional family” in which they had to complete it with words from the box.

After that, students worked in pairs and they discussed about the generations that are alive in their families. Then, I read them a short paragraph “The Guinness Record” about family generations. At the end, I discussed with them as a whole class about what they thought about the article.

Then, I wrote “Generation Gap” on the board and had students brainstorm ideas about it. Later, I asked them to write a short definition of what they thought the phrase means. After that, we discussed about it and then I gave them another definition.

After that, I made a speaking activity in groups of three. First, I dictated them some questions and the students discussed few of them, such as: Have you ever felt a generation gap with your friends? How does a generation gap affect interaction between two people? And so on.

The last activity was a listening, and students worked in some exercises from the book related to the listening. The first one was a true-false activity, and in the last one student had to write a number with the correct order of the story. Then, I checked student’s answers.

Well, this time I felt more comfortable working with this group because most of them participated a lot. The only problem was that when I was going to work in some activities, I realized students didn’t have the material. So, I had to improvise and read the paragraph so that students could discuss about it. And in the speaking activity, the teacher did not let me to develop the activity as I wanted; he told me that I didn’t have too much time. That’s why students did not have time to speak too much. I didn’t feel well because of that, but I hope the class be different next time.
